MPEG-2 to H.264 Transcoder
H.264 Advanced Video Coding offers a significant reduction in bit-rate
over earlier standards-based technologies such as MPEG-2 (65%) and MPEG-4 (40-50%).
Coupled with its other features such as enhanced error resilience, ability to effectively
handle editing effects, and streaming support, this emerging standard is poised to enable
a wide range of applications.
Rtcodec's MPEG-2 MP@ML to H.264 MP@L3 Transcoder can be used to leverage
the compression efficiency offered by H.264 with broadcast quality content produced
in MPEG-2 format. This product also enables streaming a similar quality video over lower
bandwidth channels (e.g. wireless home gateway, video-on-demand). Alternatively, it
can be used to increase the duration of stored content for a given size of storage media in
a PVR/DVR system.
Technical Specification
- Fully compliant with the Main Profile, Level 3 of the ITU-T H.264 recommendation
(also known as ISO/IEC 14496-10 or Advanced Video Coding standard)
- Can transcode as well as trans-scale from D-1 to QCIF, CIF, 1/2 D-1, 2/3 D-1, and 3/4 D-1
- Efficient, modular software architecture
- CBR or VBR operation
- Input interface: MPEG-2 Video Elementary Stream
- Output interface: NAL (Network Adaptation Layer) unit level
- Optional output of MPEG-2 decoded output and transcoder reconstructed outputs in 4:2:0 YUV format
- Leverages information in MPEG-2 bitstream to reduce complexity of transcoding, while maintaining video quality
- Compression gain extension through trans-scaling
